The History of the Lisbon trams

“We return to 1901 for a short description of the first day of electric tram circulation. Although the enthusiasm shown by the press was moderate, the Lisboners thamselves took to the streets to celebrate the novelty, as the report in the edition of O Século of the next day confirms: “A great number of people went down to the landfill, mainly to enjoy the spectacle of something entirely new to Lisbon.” On the days preceding the inauguration, the newspapers had predicted large accidents, provoking negative reactions to this hostile position from those readers more interested in the new means of transport.”
